California Academy of Sciences signed a 4-year deal for 204,000 square feet at 875 Howard St. The building will serve as the temporary home for the Academy’s aquarium and exhibits as well as its scientific collections, research scientists, and administrative facilities. The lease includes 32,000 square feet of basement space to house the Academy’s 60,000-gallon tanks as well as the building’s full 172,000 above-ground square footage. The new location is planned to be operational first quarter of 2004. The Academy will return to Golden Gate Park in 2008 upon completion of its new buildings.
“The Academy is very excited about moving to downtown. There is great potential for them to collaborate with other institutions in the area and they will also have an opportunity to test new programming concepts for the new Academy facilities in golden gate park,” said Dan Mihalovich, principal of Mihalovich Partners.
Mihalovich represented the tenant, California Academy of Sciences. Jon Wittmeyer, senior managing director of Insignia/ESG Inc., represented the owner, IRP Yerba Buena Associates, a joint venture of Fidelity Partners and ING Realty.
